Brief Strategic Family Therapy for Adolescents

Brief Strategic Family Therapy targets family interactions that are thought to maintain or exacerbate adolescent drug abuse and other co-occurring problem behaviors. Such problem behaviors include conduct problems at home and at school, oppositional behavior, delinquency, associating with antisocial peers, aggressive and violent behavior and risky sexual behavior. This therapy is based on a family systems approach to treatment, where family members’ behaviors are assumed to be interdependent such that the symptoms of any one member the drug-abusing adolescent, for example are indicative, at least in part, of what else is going on in the family system. The role of the counselor is to identify the patterns of family interaction that are associated with the adolescent’s behavior problems and to assist in changing those problem-maintaining family patterns. The therapy is meant to be a flexible approach that can be adapted to a broad range of family situations in various settings mental health clinics, drug abuse treatment programs, other social service settings and families’ homes and in various treatment modalities as a primary outpatient intervention, in combination with residential or day treatment and as an aftercare/continuing-care service to residential treatment.

Dermatologist

The skin is the largest organ of the body and is the most visible. Although many skin diseases are isolated, some are manifestations of internal disease. Therefore, a demonologist has knowledge of all aspects of surgery, rheumatology (many rheumatic diseases can feature skin symptoms and signs), immunology, neurology (the "neurocuteaneous syndromes", such as neurofibromatosis and tuberous sclerosis), infectious diseases and endocrinology. Cosmetic dermatology has long been an important part of the field, and dermatologists have been the primary innovators in this area. In the 1900s, dermatologists used dermabrasion to improve acne scarring. Doctors used fat micro-transfer to fill in cutaneous defects. Dermatologists specializing in cosmetic dermatology typically use non-invasive procedures to reverse the signs of aging. Botox has been popular since the Food and Drug Administration approved it for the treatment of wrinkles. Botox minimizes wrinkles such as frown lines and crow's feet. Fillers are used to "fill in" lines on the face and to minimize the appearance of wrinkles. Brand name fillers include Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Radiesse and Cosmoplast among many others. Dermatologists are also the pioneers of energy-based treatments for the skin and these include lasers, intense pulsed light, radiofrequency, infrared light and photodynamic treatments.

Melanoma

Melanoma is a malignant tumor of melanocytes, which present in skin but also in the bowel and the eyes. It is one of the more rare types of skin cancer, but causes the majority of skin cancer-related deaths. Malignant melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer. Uncontrolled growth of pigment cells, called melanocytes cause cancer. Despite many years of intensive laboratory and clinical research, the sole effective cure for melanoma is surgical resection of the primary tumor before it achieves a Breslow thickness greater than 1mm. Each year doctors diagnose around 160,000 new cases of melanoma and it presents more frequently in males and Caucasians. It is more common in Caucasian populations living in sunny climates than other groups. According to a WHO report, about 48,000 melanoma-related deaths occur worldwide per annum.

Types of Complementary Medicine

Complementary medicine practices fall into broad categories, such as natural products, mind and body medicine and manipulative and practices based on the body. Although these categories are informal, they are useful for discussing complementary medicine practices. Some complementary medicine practices may fit into more than one category.

Natural Products

Natural products in complementary medicine include the use of a variety of herbal medicines also known as botanicals, vitamins and minerals. Many places sell natural products over the counter as dietary supplements. Doctors do not consider some uses of dietary supplements, like taking a multivitamin to meet minimum daily nutritional requirements or taking calcium to promote bone health, complementary medicine.
Complementary medicine natural products also include probiotics and live microorganisms (usually bacteria) that are similar to microorganisms normally found in the human digestive tract and that may have beneficial effects. Probiotics are available in foods like yogurts or as dietary supplements. Probiotics are not the same as prebiotics, which are non-digestible food ingredients that selectively stimulate the growth and/or activity of microorganisms already present in the body.
Interest in and use of complementary medicine and natural products have grown considerably in the past few decades. The 2007 NHIS found that 17.7 percent of American adults had used a non-vitamin non-mineral natural product. These products were the most popular form of complementary medicine among both adults and children. The most commonly used product among adults was fish oil or omega 3s. 37.4 percent of all adults who said they used natural products used fish oils and omega 3s; popular products for children included Echinacea where 37.2 percent used and fish oil/omega 3s used by 30.5 percent.
